Willing a Bird
Providing for Your
Pet After You Are Gone
Who is going to take care of your
companion when they no longer have
you to care for them? We have
provided information, which we hope
will encourage you to arrange for
your companion should anything
unexpected happen to you or your
family.
A pre-requisite in taking on the
responsibility of having a companion
bird is to make sure arrangements
have been made for your companion in
the same manner as any member of
your family. Assuming your family
will provide a good home for your
bird may be expecting too much of
them. Unfortunately, well-meaning
family members often get in over
their heads when it comes to taking
care of a bird and all too often
they end up placing your companion
in a home you would not have agreed
to. If you are confident that the
person you have decided to entrust
the care of your companion to is
prepared to make a life long
commitment to its care, and knows
exactly how to care for it, then it
may work out for the best. However,
you should still have this outlined
in your will.
The best way to prevent an
unacceptable situation from
occurring is to specify in your will
as to who will be responsible for
your companion for the remainder of
their life. A great book that covers
this topic in depth is "When Your
Pet Outlives You" by David Congalton
and Charlotte Alexander. It is well
worth the read.
Greyhaven has been entrusted with
the responsibility of caring for
birds whose owners can no longer
provide for their companion, as a
result of an illness or who have
passed away. The advantages of
relinquishing your bird to Greyhaven
are clear; we are dedicated to the
well-being of all our charges and
ensure you, if adoption is in the
best interest of your companion, a
thorough investigation will take
place to find the perfect home, or
we will provide care on-site for the
remainder of your bird's life.
If you have not made provisions
in your will for your companion, we
strongly recommend that you do so in
consultation with a lawyer as soon
as possible. We cannot provide legal
advice, therefore these decisions
are between you, your family and
your lawyer. If you are caring for a
loved one's bird and you feel
overwhelmed, please consider placing
them with a qualified sanctuary
where you can be assured they will
receive proper care. Making sure
your loved one's companions are
properly cared for is the ultimate
gift; it shows respect and
consideration for their beloved
companion in their memory.
Greyhaven needs your help TODAY,
while you are living and able to
care for your pet bird, so that
Greyhaven can provide care for your
bird as well as other birds. You may
give Greyhaven a fixed dollar amount
or specific property such as real
estate, stock or personal property.
If you wish Greyhaven to care for
your companion, your estate planning
documents should clearly state this
provision, along with a bequest
sufficient to cover the housing,
food, and veterinary care of your
companion.
